Not all efficiency upgrades pay off equally
Generic advice on energy-efficient upgrades treats every improvement as equally worthwhile. In South Africa, with load shedding factored in, that's not true. Some upgrades save you money on your municipal bill; others save you money and keep your household or business running during an outage. The second category should come first.
Start with the geyser
Water heating is typically the single largest electrical load in a South African home. A solar or gas geyser conversion — or even just a geyser blanket and timer on an existing electric unit — is usually the highest-return, lowest-cost improvement available, and one of the few upgrades that pays for itself in months rather than years.
Battery capacity should follow the audit, not the other way around
It's tempting to buy the biggest battery and inverter combination you can afford. It's more cost-effective to size the system to your actual essential loads — lights, wifi, fridge, geyser element — rather than paying for capacity you'll never draw down. This is where a proper load assessment earns its cost back many times over.
Water storage is an efficiency upgrade too
In the same category: water storage tanks and rainwater harvesting. Municipal water interruptions in parts of Mpumalanga are common enough that storage capacity is now a practical utility decision, not a luxury, and it pairs naturally with any plumbing or geyser work already underway.
